This past month has been full of traveling around Tennessee and making connections that will continue to benefit JAST moving forward.
The JAST Board and members of the Japanese Traders and Manufacturing Association in Memphis enjoyed the Memphis Redbirds game, hosted by First Horizon’s John Gurney (who is a JAST Board ex-officio advisor). It was exciting to cheer on the Redbirds win and see the fireworks display at the end of the game! JAST’s Ginger Byrn also set up a JAST information table at this year’s Knox Asian Festival. And, I was excited to have a tour and help celebrate DENSO Manufacturing Athens Tennessee, Inc. 25th Anniversary this week.
JAST is hosting, or will be present at, a lot of exciting programs this fall. Please keep an eye on our emails, social media accounts, or our website. I look forward to seeing you at one, or all, of them!

The JAS Chicago book club focuses on highlighting voices and stories with a strong connection to Japan. For their next meeting, the group chose Clark and Division, written by Naomi Hirohara and set on the northside of Chicago in 1944. It’s the story of a young woman searching for the truth about her revered older sister’s death, bringing to focus the struggles of one Japanese-American family released from mass incarceration at Manzanar during World War II. The event is co-hosted between JETAA Chicago and the Japan-America Society of Chicago YPC Book Club.

As the heat of summer dissipates and the cooler temperatures of autumn set in, enjoy an evening of classical Japanese poems to mark this seasonal shift. The Japan-America Society of Boston will explore some autumn haiku from poets of the past, teach about the various kigo, or seasonal words, which the poets drew upon, and share a few contemporary poems of the autumn experience.

JAST Guide to Daily Living in Tennessee
Moving to a new area is daunting, especially if it's in a different country! JAST created the Guide to Daily Living in Tennessee (in Japanese) for newcomers and long-time residents alike. The guide is intended for Tennessee residents originally from Japan, whether new or long-time residents, and provides essential information on aspects of daily life that may differ from Japan or other parts of the world.
Information featured includes how to open a bank account or obtain a driver's license, interpretation guides for the grocery store or the weather forecast, where to find medical services, and much more! Please let your Japanese friends, colleagues, and neighbors know about this helpful resource guide. We also welcome suggestions or additions to the guide that may have been overlooked, or that may be specific to your community.
We hope this will help our Japanese communities across Tennessee!
