Dear JAST Members and Friends,
Spring is the symbol of new beginnings and celebrations in many places and in various cultures, and this is certainly true in Japan. April, in particular, marks the beginning of a new school year as well as a new fiscal year for most businesses and companies. And in every Japanese person’s mind when thinking about this season is the image of our beloved and beautiful cherry blossom trees.
JAST, also, is celebrating a new beginning and relationship this month as we welcome our new CEO, Madeline Adams. You can read more about Madeline here: https://bit.ly/36xTCME. Please join me in welcoming Madeline to her new leadership role.
As you read this, cherry trees in Tennessee are in full bloom. On April 9, we will be celebrating the Tennessee-Japan relationship at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival at Nashville Public Square. It will be a full, in-person event for the first time since 2019. We hope that you will be able to join us there.

4月9日、テネシー日米協会は、2022年のナッシュビル桜祭りを開催します。ナッシュビル桜祭りは、米国南東部における大規模な無料の野外フェスティバルのひとつです。この桜祭りは、楽しい家族向けのイベントで、 日本の文化を実体験していただくことができ、コミュニティを結びつけてくれます。 雷太鼓の胸が高鳴るようなパフォーマンス、飴細工師による魔法のトリック、武道のデモンストレーション、ナッシュビル人道協会の支援につながるパップス・イン・ピンク・パレード、そして日本のお祭りには欠かせない盆踊りなどが披露されます。

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, along with the Florida Delegation, and Southeast U.S./Japan Association, Inc. (‘SEUS/Japan’) announced that Florida will be the host for the 44th Annual SEUS/Japan Joint Meeting Program in Orlando. The meeting dates are November 16-19, 2022. Eric Silagy, President & CEO of Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), will serve as Chairman of the meeting along with his Japan co-chair, Mr. Masaaki Tsuya, External Advisor, Bridgestone Corporation. テネシー日米協会・啓発イニシアチブは、テネシー州の日本人コミュニティを支援し相互理解と文化的認識を促進する、地域パートナーの取り組みを強化するために昨年設立されました。 より効率的な運営と毎年行われるリーダーシップ引継ぎのため、オンラインリソースを作成することは、メンフィス日本商工懇話会が提案したプロジェクトの利点のひとつです。メンフィス日本商工懇話会とメンフィス日本語補習校のために、相互交流型でバイリンガルのWebサイトが開発されます。この新しいウェブサイトは、メンフィス日本語補習校のスタッフ、教師、保護者、学生のコミュニケーションを向上させ、幅広いコミュニティへの働きかけの機会を増やしていくことでしょう。そして多くの企業や文化団体が、メンフィス日本商工懇話会と、メンフィスにおける日本のビジネスと日本のコミュニティの重要性について知っていくことになるでしょう。 来月のニュースレターでは、ベルモント大学とメンフィス商工会議所が手掛けたプロジェクトについてお届けいたします。 |

Amplify Nashville Honors Mina Johnson |

On April 14th at 7:00 p.m., Amplify Nashville 2022 will honor Mina Johnson at OZ Arts Nashville for her exemplary public service as Nashville's first Japanese-American Metro Council member.
A native of Tokyo, Mina was Nashville’s first Japanese naturalized citizen to be elected to the Metro Council and continues to be an active voice for her community. Mina currently serves on the Metro Planning Commission representing the Mayor’s office, the Board of Sister Cities and the Board of Women for Tennessee’s Future.

Often overlooked as a travel destination, Fukushima is actually the third largest prefecture of Japan, and within its vast borders, you will find fantastically preserved historical sights, gorgeous natural landscapes, and delicious food. |

The word kansha, or “appreciation,” is evident in many aspects of Japanese society and daily living. In the kitchen, kansha expresses gratitude for both nature’s bounty and for the efforts of clever people who bring that bounty to the table. Practicing kansha in the kitchen means creating nutritionally sound, aesthetically satisfying meals while avoiding waste, conserving energy, and sustaining natural resources. This program by the Japan-America Society of Dallas-Fort Worth will focus on one important aspect of kitchen kansha: ichi motsu zen shoku 一物全食 (one food, used entirely). This age-old custom of using all edible parts of ingredients — peels, roots, seeds, bones — echoes some of the sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. |

Following the success of last year’s Digital Japan Bowl, the Japan-America Society of Washington DC will continue to hold the 2022 competition online, welcoming over approximately 200 students and teachers from around the country and beyond to participate in a digital, real-time competition over two days. The aim is to offer students a rewarding experience that celebrates their dedication to learning about Japan. |
